Humanity began in small tribes where survival required natural cooperation. You couldn't survive alone. The tribe was one organism—everyone depended on everyone else. This wasn't philosophy. It was necessity.
What Changed
As humans developed, self-interest began to emerge—the drive to distinguish oneself, to take more, to compete.
Agricultural Revolution (~10,000 BCE - 1800s CE)
Civilization
Order Through Authority
Settlement and agriculture created larger communities. But these couldn't operate on instinct alone. We needed organization.
Enter hierarchy: kings, priests, chiefs. Religion and tradition became the glue holding society together. You belonged because of your tribe, your faith, your king.
What Changed
Individual self-interest continued growing. People began questioning authority. The Enlightenment asked: 'What about MY rights? MY potential?'

Industrialization
The Individual Emerges
The Industrial Revolution shattered the old order. People left farms for factories. Traditional communities began to dissolve.
A new force emerged: individual self-interest seeking to distinguish itself.
Yes, tribe and faith still mattered. But a NEW layer was added: individual achievement. What you could DO. What you could EARN. What you could BECOME.
What Changed
The self-interest that began as 'I can achieve more' became 'I DESERVE more.' The seed of insatiable individual desire was planted.
Late 20th Century (1960s - 2000s)
Peak Self-Interest
The Height of Individualism
By the late 20th century, this self-interest reached its peak. The promise was clear: achieve, acquire, compete—and you'll be fulfilled.
We built entire systems around this:
- Education: Compete for grades, rankings, admission
- Work: Climb the ladder, outperform others
- Relationships: Find someone who COMPLETES you
- Success: More money, status, achievement
What Broke
The promise was a lie. People achieved everything they were told to want... and felt empty. Isolated. Anxious. Depressed.
Success without connection is not fulfillment. It's loneliness with better furniture.
Early 21st Century (2000s - Present)
The Crisis
The Breakdown of the Self-Interested Model
Today, the self-interested model is collapsing across every domain:
Relationships: Dating apps give us infinite options, yet people can't find real connection. Loneliness is epidemic.
Work: People achieve career success and feel hollow. Burnout is the norm.
Environment & Community: We've treated Nature as something to conquer. We're more 'connected' than ever yet more isolated.
This isn't random. This is DESIGNED PRESSURE.
Nature is saying: the self-interested phase is over. What worked for 10,000 years has reached its limit.

We Are One Integral System
Here's what's actually true—what's ALWAYS been true, but we're only now being forced to see: We are one global system.
- A virus in one country becomes a pandemic everywhere.
- An economic crash in one region ripples globally.
- Environmental destruction anywhere affects the whole planet.
- Your relationship problems are everyone's relationship problems.
Look at Nature:
Your heart doesn't compete with your lungs. They collaborate because they're one body. A forest doesn't pit trees against each other. The entire ecosystem operates as one integral system.
Humanity has become a single organism. Technology connected us physically. Now consciousness must catch up.
