10. Changing Direction, Not the Person

Changing Direction, Not the Person

This is the fifth and concluding exercise. It creates a deep mindset shift at home.

Simple mechanics: each partner names a quality they dislike in themselves, or one that creates recurring friction. The other partner finds, with complete honesty, its positive and useful side for the relationship.

The quality itself is not going to change. What changes is its direction and use. Stubbornness becomes loyalty and perseverance. Over-worrying becomes alertness and safeguarding the home.

Nothing in a person's nature is required to be uprooted. The work is finding the proper use: putting traits toward connection instead of toward separation. True acceptance is seeing how strengths and rough edges complement our relationship into one whole.

What you gain

Positive acceptance of your partner. You release the wish and illusion "if only she were different." You learn to accept your wife, and yourself, as you are, and harness existing traits for the good of the home.

A bond of appreciation. You move from quietly enduring flaws to understanding how those same traits serve the relationship.
