8. Where Are We Headed: Building a Shared Vision
Where Are We Headed: Building a Shared Vision
This is the third exercise: building a detailed, crisp, realistic picture of the relationship you both aspire to reach.
Stay out of slogans like "may we be happy." Get down to fine detail. What does a regular Tuesday look like in the home you want to build? How do you treat each other when you are tired? What are you working toward together?
Define two clear points: where you are today, and where exactly you are heading. The work is not complaining about the distance between those points. Refine the destination until you can walk toward it with intention.
Why a shared picture holds
A relationship is more than husband and wife alone. There is also the purpose above both of you. That purpose holds you together when each ego pulls its own way. It is a third point neither of you occupies alone, and both of you commit to building toward. When a defined goal exists above both spouses, dynamics change. You stop fighting each other and work together for the future you want.
What you gain
From household management to partnership. With a shared target, you stop being two people managing logistics and bills, and become partners in a mission. That shared goal between you will generate strong forces and keep your connection strong.
Stability amid emotional storms. Shared vision is the anchor that holds the home steady on days when you feel distant, or when stress and arguments arise.
