1. First Acquaintance

Introduction

Welcome to your "First Acquaintance," an engaging exercise in self-reflection and interpersonal understanding. Here, we dive deep into the facets of our identities, using the lens of an outside observer to bring light to our habits, behaviors, preferences, and desires.

Viewing ourselves as psychologists conducting a self-study, we will articulate our observations in the third person, much like detailing the characteristics of a separate entity. Some participants find using a doll or a random object as a stand-in helps distance themselves, making it easier to discuss personal details objectively.

The key to success is to share as much as possible about:

  • Likes and dislikes
  • Fears, upsets, and joys
  • Energy sources and energy drainers
  • Goals and fears

By introducing ourselves in the third person, we create a comfortable, detached environment that encourages openness. For example, "Alex enjoys hot weather, and cherishes time spent with family."

Initially, you may find it difficult to disclose personal details objectively. Don't worry. This becomes easier with practice. Over time, your goal is to unveil deeper aspects of yourself like your character, anxieties, fears, hopes, and desires.

We're not merely discussing ourselves, we're explorers on a shared journey of discovery, seeking to unravel the mysteries within ourselves and others. This exercise challenges us to transcend our internal biases and stereotypes.

Remember, if a discovery provokes a negative reaction, don't attribute it to your personal self. Acknowledge that we are a complex blend of upbringing, social conditioning, media influence, and innate qualities. In the quest for a healthier relationship, we owe each other complete honesty. There's no room for judgment or concealment.

Preparation

Think of yourselves as two astronauts looking down from space, observing two individuals striving to build a strong relationship. Your mission is to understand these characters thoroughly and illuminate their characteristics to enhance their connection. The aim is to foster trust and honesty, not necessarily to provide accurate self-descriptions.

Exercise

  1. Talk about yourselves in third person.
  2. Agree that this exercise is for the benefit of your relationship.
  3. Be open, sincere, and honest throughout the conversation.
  4. Form an internal image of your partner. Listen with positivity and allow free expression.
  5. Agree on the topics you will discuss.

Example topics

  • Likes and dislikes, sources of happiness, laughter, fears, dreams
  • Good and bad habits
  • Parents, friends, life-changing events, childhood memories, fears, hobbies, favorite colors, foods, books, music
  • Medical concerns
  • Life plans

Now that you understand the framework and intent of the "First Acquaintance," you're ready to embark on this enriching journey. Good luck.
